Something that bothers me about multi tasking
I am a multi tasker, I typically read a book and watch television at the same time. I will work on sending e-mails, updating a blog and checking facebook and myspace all at the same time. Of course I have to go back and forth but that is part of multi tasking. By the way, I am usually studying while doing all these things as well.
We live in a society that really demands multi tasking. In today’s world of cell phones, e-mail, blackberry’s, facebook, myspace and now twitter, we either have to do a lot of things together or just miss out. I have learned to do all of these things and to be honest it is quite a lot to keep up with but there has to be some system with the chaos.
Typically on my day off I will keep my cell phone with me unless I am running and it just isn’t convenient to run with a cell phone and I don’t need the distraction either (I am running on the highway and need to watch for cars). I usually will check myspace and facebook a couple of times a day and I will go to my blog on a regular basis as I have thoughts and start a blog. Many times I save what I am doing until I have time to do more of the detail.
At the same time I have to keep office hours, study for sermons every Sunday night, lessons every Wednesday night and most weeks I have other speaking engagements that I am responsible to fulfill. I do these things and I love it as well as my favorite thing, spending time with my family.
Here is what bothers me about the multi tasking world. It is the people who never answer e-mails, never return phone calls and never update a blog. If you are going to have these things and put them out there for people to contact you, please return the messages. I have patience with individuals but I don’t believe that as professionals in the church or the secular world we have any excuse. If we can’t update a blog, don’t have one because people will get frustrated and not bother checking it. If you have voice mail and have no intention of returning the calls then say so in your greeting. If you offer e-mail as a way of contact and can’t return them then take the e-mail down.
Anyway there is my soapbox for the day. I just believe that people are counting on us and we offer them way to contact us, we should be quick to respond.
Blessings
Ronnie
