The Only Evangelism That Works: Be An Imagebearer

Book Notes: Hurtling Toward Oblivion by Richard Swenson

Hurtling toward Oblivion

I have actually wanted to read this book for a couple of years but it wasn’t available on Kindle until late in 2012. That coupled with the fact that I am doing a three-week series on “The End” made me to decide to read it.

Swenson is not a doomsday prophet and he is not a date setter. These two things along make the book a very worthwhile read.

C. S. Lewis’s statement: “As a Christian I take it for granted that human history will some day end; and I am offering Omniscience no advice as to the best date for that consummation.”

Swenson’s point in the book is that the world is on a destruction course for several reasons. The number one reason is that we live in a fallen world. Coupled with that we are a people who are going faster and growing faster. It is the natural order of life to grow and want to have better.

“Currently we are behaving like insane passengers on a jet plane who are busy taking all the rivets and bolts out of the craft as it flies along,” writes columnist Tom Harper in the Toronto Star.

“Even though Jesus warned against setting specific dates for His return,22 He nevertheless admonished his followers to recognize the signs of its approach.”

“C. S. Lewis in The World’s Last Night. “We have been taught to think of the world as something that grows slowly towards perfection, something that ‘progresses’ or ‘evolves.’ Christian Apocalyptic offers us no such hope.”

“If God has called us for such a time as this, He has His reasons. His message is the only hope, and He has asked us to bear that word to the hopeless. His foundation is the only place to stand. His love is the only force that can endure the fire of the future. If God has chosen this to be a special time, why did He pick you? Why did He pick me? Why did He pick our generational shift for these remarkable and unprecedented conditions? I am not sure. But let’s understand it is a privilege, and let’s live ready.”

If you need good information that we truly are on a collision course then by all means read this book. There are no rogue predictions, just simple facts that will convince any skeptic that we are headed to hard times.
