Would you like to do something Radical for Christmas this year?
I am signed up for and ready to run the Myrtle Beach Marathon February 13th, 2009. I am running in honor and support of Children in Southern Sudan.
Maybe your family could send your gift to the children of Sudan in honor of each other!
Thats right, I am running again and this time there is the possibility of two people joining me and raising money for the children as well. I am excited about the possibilities.
If you would like to support, send your check to 1st Hillsville United Methodist Church, C/O Ronnie G Collins PO Box 356 Hillsville Virginia 24343. Make the check to Holston Conference and on the remit line “Hope for the children of Sudan”.
Why not do something you love and help others at the same time?
Together we can change the world!
Our Holston Conference of The United Methodist Church has partnered with Southern Sudan to help with the needs there and there is a possibility that I could travel there on a mission trip in the future. In the mean time I want to do something to help the children.
Here is how it will work. I will travel to Myrtle Beach in February and run the 26.2 mile Marathon on February 13th Day in honor of and support of The Children of Sudan Africa, “Hope for the Children”.
Every gift that is given will go to support the children of Sudan, “Hope for the Children”. I will personally pay all of the expenses of entering the race as well as transportation to and from Myrtle Beach.
I have a Goal of $2620.00 that is $100.00 per mile.
Help me meet the goal but more importantly help the children of Sudan.
There are several ways that you can support.
# 1 is in your prayers
26 people (Churches, Youth Groups, UMW, UMM, any group)could donate $100 and I would reach the goal.
Donate $1 for every mile = 26 dollars
Donate $5 for every mile = 130 dollars
Donate $10 for every mile = 260 dollars
Donate $20 for every mile = 520 dollars
Donate $100 for every mile = 2600 dollars
or simply Donate Any $ Amount
Special Opportunity – You could join me in the run and help raise money for the Children! The Marathon limit is filling fast but you could still run with me if you hurry.
My goal is simply to raise as much money as possible and have fun doing it. I am inviting people (Runners) who would like to help raise money for the children of Sudan to join me in the run. You can sign up to run at
http://www.mbmarathon.com/site3.aspx
Make your checks payable to: The Holston Conference of The United Methodist Church or The Holston UMC
Designate your Check “Hope for the Children of Sudan”
Mail to: Ronnie G Collins, PO Box 356, Hillsville Virginia 24343
I will compile the checks and get them to Holston Conference on behalf of the children. You will receive a letter from me to signify when the gift is received.
I am excited to see just what Miracle the Lord will do.
Ronnie
Hope for the
Children of Sudan

Here‘s what is happening…
In the past two decades, more than 2 million people have lost their lives through violence, disease and starvation in southern Sudan due to a North vs. South civil war.
In Western Sudan, in the Darfur region, the Coalition for International Justice released a report in April, 2005 stating that approximately 400,000 men, women and children had been killed due to genocide in the region.
Years of food shortage, displaced children/families, and disease have forced millions (35 million+) to live in crowded refugee camps. Thousands have died and continue to die, needlessly.
This is Sudan, a country in crisis.
A Story from the Bible
Matthew 25:35-40
35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’
The lust of vindication
Another thing that distracts us is the lust of vindication. St Augustine prayed “O Lord, deliver me from this lust of always vindicating myself.” That temper of mind destroys the soul’s faith in God. “I must explain myself; I must get people to understand.” Our Lord never explained anything; He left mistakes to correct themselves. When we discern that people are not going on spiritually and allow the discernment to turn to criticism, we block our way to God. God never gives us discernment in order that we may criticize, but that we may intercede.

Your High School – A Mission Field
Taking THE Cause to Every Campus
See if you can figure out this riddle. Each one of these dots on the map below represents one of the 67,342 high school and middle schools in America. What do all of these dots have in common?
Source: The Coaching Center
Answer: All of them represent a mission field that needs missionaries.
40% of young people in America now consider themselves complete outsiders to the Christian faith. And that doesn’t even include the millions of teenagers who consider themselves Christians just because that’s what their parents claim to be. But as you well know, being a Christian is not something you are born into; it’s something you’re born again into. After all, being born into a Christian family makes you a Christian to the degree that being born in a garage makes you a car.
So with this sobering reality in mind, let’s get serious about unleashing you the teens in our youth group to see their school as a mission field.
Let’s enlist in the cause – THE Cause – of reaching your friends and your school with the message of the gospel.
I am challenging our students at Out of the Box to ‘Adopt Their School’ and reach your campus with the message of the gospel.
We will also sign up as a youth group to adopt each of the school campuses represented in our group.
Electric Truth
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost (Luke 19:10, NIV).
If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders. When he arrives, he will call together his friends and neighbors, saying, “Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.” In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away! (Luke 15:4-7, NLT).
- Based on these verses, what is one of the central things Jesus’ heart beat for?
- Does your heart beat for that same thing? Why or why not?
- Our world today is filled with many good and worthy causes, what are some of the causes you are already involved in?
- How is developing a heart for the lost similar to other good and worth causes? How is it different?
- Do you think the teens that you know care about those who don’t know Jesus?
- How can you help other teens see their school as a mission field?
Jolt and Bolt
Grow Deep accountability question: What’s one thing you can do this week to help you align your personal priorities with Jesus’ heartbeat when it comes to seeking the lost?
Go Wide accountability question: What’s one thing you can do this week to help other teens see their school as a mission field?

We have judged our fellow men as sinners; if God should judge us like that we would be in hell. God judges us through the marvelous atonement of Jesus Christ.”

Here comes the judge…
This is my text for the SNL Sermon this week. I welcome your thoughts and comments as I ponder the text.
Ronnie
Matthew 7: 1-6 (NIV)
1“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
3“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
6“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.

Asking God for strength today Extra. Samuel had a very restless night. Praying 4 a better day for him 4:25 AM Dec 6th from TwitterBerry
Dont Worry Be Happy – The Sermon
Worrying is a lasting preoccupation with past or future bad events. It is a type of thinking that makes you feel as if you were reliving a past event or living out a future one, and you cannot stop those thoughts from occurring. Such thoughts are often characterized by the phrases “If only…” and “What if…”
“If Only” Thoughts
“If only…” refers to thoughts about an unhappy event that you wish hadn’t happened. The event has left you with an unresolved emotional feeling, and under these circumstances your mind continues to try to resolve it, trying to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it.
Unfortunately, in many cases, because the event has already happened, nothing can be done. You cannot go back into the past and miraculously have the event turn out differently. But when your mind recalls the event, its natural tendency is to keep trying to solve the problem it represented.
“What If” Thoughts
“What if…” refers to thoughts about the future. In the case of worry, these thoughts are about any number of possible disagreeable things that could happen.
- “What if I have an automobile accident?”
- “What if I run out of money and can’t pay my bills?”
- “What if my spouse should someday no longer love me?”
- “What if I make a mistake and everyone thinks I’m a fool because of it?”
Dr. Charles Mayo of the famed Mayo clinic said: “I’ve never known a man who died of hard work, but MANY who die of worry.”
“The reason why worry kills more people than work is that more people worry than work”. Robert Frost
“As a rule, men worry more about what they can’t see than about what they can”. Julius Caesar
Worry refers to negative self-talk that often detracts the mind from focusing on the problem at hand.
What does the Bible have to say about Worry?
Proverbs 12: 25 (NLT)
Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.
Psalms 55:22 (NCV)
22 Give your worries to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will never let good people down.
Isaiah 26: 3-4 (TNIV)
3 You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.4 Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal.
I Peter 5:7 (NLT)
7 Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
Is it a sin to worry? The answer is yes!
It is a sin to do anything that Jesus tells us not to do and Jesus says in the following passage 3 times,(Matthew 6:25-34) “do not worry”.
Philippians 4: 6-7 (NLT) Author-Paul
6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
vs. 25 has the word “therefore” and the therefore is referring back to the pervious scripture vs. 25
Jesus has just been speaking to the disciples (that is you if you know Jesus)on the subject of “treasures in Heaven” and He just said “No one can serve two masters. Either he or she will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
Matthew 6: 25-34 (NIV)
25“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
27Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? (Everyone of us should write this on a card and stick it in a prominent place)
28“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY
(What are some of the things we people worry about during the Christmas Holiday Season?)
What gifts do we buy for those we love?
What gift do we buy for that one we have to buy for and don’t like? lol.
How much money should we spend on that gift?
Will they really appreciate it anyway?
How much money should I spend on myself while I am buying all these nice things for everyone else?
Hey I need food, clothing, and shelter!
And by the way, those black shoes I have don’t go with the brown outfit, the brown shoes don’t go with the red outfit, the white shoes can’t be worn in the winter, the boots can’t be worn in the summer!
So, I need more shoes!
Then the biggie – how am I ever going to pay for all of this? The credit cards, the layaway’s, the bills that I have run up tying to please, impress, and satisfy?
The truth is: We have it all wrong!
We think to much about how much money to spend for all the wrong reasons.
We think too much about how good I look or how fashionable I am .
We think too much about buying gifts for everyone that we know.
We think too much about how to be a people pleaser.
We have gotten it all wrong!
Matthew 6: 25-34
Matthew 6: 33 (NIV)
33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Here is a Facebook status that I posted a few days ago in preparation for this sermon and some responses:
Ronnie G Collins HELP! Matt 6:33 Respond & tell me what this means, seek 1st his kingdom & his righteousness, & all these things will B given to you as well.
The verse is not about “receiving” as some might think. It is about worry (look at 6:25-34). We must turn to God for help and obey Him in everything. We tend to give our everyday worries (people, food, things, “stuff”) priority in our thoughts. Giving God priority thinking time causes all the “stuff” to fall into place. This is something I need to remind myself of everyday.
each day( if I find myself in his presence and guidance then I will be content ). It will make the “things” of this world seem less important and souls can be witnessed to, etc.
God supplies all our needs. We, in this modern day, have it all backwards. We focus on ME, ME, Me. His rightouseness-that we see him as He is-AND THEN OUR LIVES REFLECT THAT.
God still blessed him with many of the promises made, but I would have loved to see what Solomon could have been had he sought only the kingdom of God and his righteousness.
to seek after, look for, strive to find

want to
want, ask, ask for; demand, require, expect; consider, deliberate, examine investigate
I believe Jesus is saying “I love you more than anything else in the world. As a matter of fact, I came to earth in human flesh (Jesus the Christ) and died because I love you so much.
Therefore, love me more than anything or anyone else. To show that you love me this way is to spend time with me, reading and studying the Scripture, Giving, Praying, and Fasting as stated in Matthew Chapter 6: 1-18
Want to know me better, ask for understanding, demand insight, require nothing but to find me. Search with expectancy, examine every possibility and investigate every avenue.
Search for me as if I were treasure hidden in a field, search for me as if I were pearls more valuable than anything.
Make me #1 because I made you #1 over Two Thousand Years ago.
Give over your worries for your search for me and I will take care of the rest.
Ronnie
Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds.
Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.
Holston Evangelism Conference -Rudy Rasmus & Bishop James Swanson
3000 Baptisms in Holston on Pentecost Sunday
50 “Golden Days” of Evangelism
40 Days of Prayer and Preparation
TELL ME MORE!
You may remember hearing from the stage of Annual Conference that the Conference Witness team would challenge us to celebrate 3000 baptisms on Pentecost Sunday (May 23, 2010) in Holston Conference. The Witness Team would like to take this opportunity to “brief” you, our Conference leaders, on the plan, invite you to ask questions, share comments, and help publicize as we continue refining and developing this time for an exciting and potentially Conference-transforming Spring in Holston Conference. Info coming soon in the Call, Call 2 and a save the date(s) letter to each pastor under appointment in Holston.
In the book Prophetic Evangelist, Harry Denman called the 50 days between Easter and Pentecost the “50 Golden Days of Evangelism”. He also wrote a letter in which he called on every pastor not only to observe Pentecost, but to lay the groundwork for experiencing Pentecost. That is what we are praying for in Holston in 2010. Here is an outline:
* Feb 19-20 Holston Evangelism Conference
This event will be held at Cokesbury Center in Knoxville, TN. We welcome the Rev. Rudy Rasmus and Bishop James Swanson to lead us through this inspirational and motivating event. We will celebrate the past year’s theme and covenant to “Offer Them Christ” and to invite Holston to the next steps toward Pentecost 2010. Friday: Optional Mission Outreach (“Grace bags” to Knoxville Homeless) 3-5; Registration 5-7; Session I begins 7pm. Bishop Swanson will conclude the conference by 3pm on Saturday.
* 40 Days of Prayer and Preparation — beginning on Feb 23rd, we will encourage every congregation to pray, fast and ask God for a burden for the lost. Churches may organize specific prayer groups, teaching or preaching about prayer and fasting, or other creative Holston ways of preparation. The Witness Team will provide a 40 Day Prayer Guide which will be daily devotions written by lay and clergy members of our Conference. (District Superintendents – if you haven’t already, there may still be space for you to add a day’s devotional writing…) At this time we are working on the best delivery of these guides, but at the least we will be emailing copies to local church pastors and designated leaders for copying and distribution. The Witness Team is asking that every Pastor and Lay member who has a blog to add the daily devotional to your church and personal blogs.
* 50 Golden Days of Evangelism — from Easter to Pentecost 2010, each congregation will be asked to intentionally concentrate on evangelism in their community. Again, the Conference Witness Team will supply a guide (“50 Days of Evangelism”) with concrete, specific suggestions for individuals and groups within churches to start conversations, build relationships, and offer Christ in your community. Some congregations may plan for a Pentecost celebration with dinner on the grounds where river baptisms and all other forms of baptism recognized by The UMC may take place.
*** 1 Great Day of Pentecost *** — baptisms, renewals and lives transformed for and by Jesus Christ
40 Days of Preparation + 50 Days of Evangelism = A 90 Day Investment in 3000 lives. Sound unlikely? Unbelievable? Too much? In our 904 churches, this would be an AVERAGE of 3.1 baptisms per worshipping community. What do we have to lose? Suppose we ONLY baptize 1000??? Help the Witness Team make this Spring of Pentecost preparation a reality for Holston. No single group, ministry team or leader can do this. We believe that God is in this… and we ask for your support, feedback and most importantly for your prayers.

A Carton of Beer
Here is a story that I can understand and relate with. In 2001 my nephew Kevin was in a terrible auto accident and spent about 2 weeks in ICU at Baptist Hospital. During that trying time in our lives we met another young man and his family who were also there at the hospital.
That young man was Josh Hill. Josh had been hit by a drunk driver. Our families spent a lot of time together for those weeks in the hospital and we became friends.
Here is Josh’s story.
Ronnie
My Hero JOSH HILL
Through the eyes of his father
Rick Hill
Saturday, November 10th, 2001, began as a normal crisp fall day. Josh fixed pancakes for breakfast and afterward he helped me rake the yard and gather up leaves. He had played in the season ending football game for Patrick County High School the night before and he was looking forward to his first practice with the varsity basketball team on Monday. Josh had a part time job at the local Lowe’s grocery store and went to work later that evening. After work he went to hear his brother, Daniel, and his band play at the local Rotary building.
I play the drums for a gospel group, “The Joyful Noise” and we played for a hospice benefit the same evening. My wife, Lisa, and I also stopped by to hear Daniel and his band play on our way home from the benefit. When we got there, Daniel said we had just missed Josh. He was tired and going home. Lisa and I stayed about 15 minutes to hear Daniel’s band and then left to go home. In all about 30 minutes behind Josh. I had mentioned to Lisa several times during the evening that I wished I had told Josh to wait for us at the Rotary building.
On our way home, approximately 3 miles from the Rotary building, we could see the night sky lit up with bright lights. Traffic had backed up and we could smell smoke. We knew there was an accident ahead and we were both afraid it could be Josh but we didn’t share our fear with each other. Lisa had tried calling our house several times hoping Josh was home and would pick up the phone. I had been in the rescue squad for many years and as we got closer to the scene, I decided I would see if I could help. When I got out of the car I told Lisa I hoped it wasn’t Josh. I ran up to see if there was anything I could do and didn’t realize it was Josh in the car until I was looking at him slumped behind the steering wheel. The car was mangled so badly I didn’t recognize it. There was one small area that wasn’t totally crushed and that was where Josh was. Stuart, Virginia is a small town and everybody knows me. Fire and Rescue didn’t know I was on the scene until I let out a wail and cried “is he alive, is he alive?”. They told me Josh was alive and led me away from the scene. I ran back to our car and to Lisa crying out over and over “it’s Josh, oh God it’s Josh”.
The hospital was less than five minutes away. When the ambulance pulled up, the ER doctor jumped in the back of the ambulance. Lisa and I didn’t know what was going on so Daniel, who had arrived at the accident scene before Josh was transported, went over to see what he could find out. He came back to tell us that Josh was being air lifted to Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The doctor jumped out of the back of the ambulance, closed the door and hit it a couple of times to signal for them to go. We went back to Rotary field to wait for the helicopter to come pick up my son.
The hardest call I’ve ever had to make was to Josh’s mom, Linda Mize, and tell her Josh had been in a car accident. She asked me to have him transported to Northern Surry hospital in Mount Airy, North Carolina, where she worked. I had to tell her it was bad and he was being air lifted to Baptist.
Upon arrival at Baptist Josh was immediately placed in the intensive care unit in critical condition. We were told he had suffered a moderate to severe head injury, a broken femur, and later we learned he had a contusion on his spinal cord. Because of the head injury, we were told the first 72 hours would be critical to his survival. We were told that Josh’s age, he was 16 at the time, and his being in shape from football and working out would be a big plus in his favor. The doctors also told us that because of his youth, he was not using nearly all of his brain and that the brain could re-route itself to compensate for the part that was damaged.
During the first few hours of Josh being admitted to Baptist hospital, the waiting room started to fill with friends and family and details of the accident began to emerge. We learned that Josh was hit head–on by a 19 year old illegal Mexican immigrant who was driving under the influence, without a driver’s license and without insurance. The vehicle that he was driving had caught fire and burned, hence the smoke that we smelled when we got close to the accident scene. The driver and his two passengers escaped serious injury. The driver was also brought to Baptist hospital and was in the ICU adjacent to the one Josh was in.
On Monday November 12, instead of the first day of basketball practice, his coach, Bryan Davis brought the whole basketball team to the hospital waiting room. Their heart wasn’t in basketball practice when one of their teammates was in the hospital fighting for his life. Josh’s brain began to swell and a couple of days later it had swollen to the point that emergency surgery to remove part of his brain was the only chance that Josh had to live (medically the only chance, we know the One who was always in control). Coach Davis again brought the basketball team to the hospital and as Josh was being brought back from the operating room, the team lined up on both sides of the hall and was clapping for him and cheering him on. A couple of weeks later, at their first home game, the Patrick County Cougars honored Josh by putting 42 seconds on the time clock and cheering for him to get well. 42 was Josh’s number.
Josh still had not emerged from the coma and we got very little encouragement from the doctors. We knew it was pretty bad when the neurological doctors wouldn’t make eye contact with us. There were two doctors who didn’t give up on Josh, even encouraged us to take him to a facility that dealt with coma stimulation after his release from Baptist. One was Dr. Chang, the Director of Trauma Services, who was on call and in the emergency room with Josh when he went in, and the other was Dr. Mondi. These two men were so compassionate and even in the darkest hours told us to never give up. Dr. Mondi went so far as to tell us repeatedly “I just know that Josh is in there”. We had one intern to tell us Josh’s quality of life was likely to be what we saw at that time – in a coma with machines breathing for him and a feeding tube for nourishment. He went on to suggest that we look for a nursing home for Josh when he was released from the hospital. This was said at Josh’s bedside when we had been so careful to be positive and not get emotional when we visited Josh during the limited visiting hours. Josh’s mother and I were stunned that he would say such a thing and furious that he said it at Josh’s bedside. Josh’s mom was the first to recover and pull him to the side of the ICU. I didn’t have any trouble reading her lips as she took him to task for his bedside manner. When she got through, I had my say. I had to tell him that he wasn’t the one in charge, God was and I had faith that God would bring him out of the coma. I almost felt sorry for him but I bet he learned to be more respectful.
As Josh finally stabilized, they operated on his leg and put it in a cast. We couldn’t understand why it took so long, about 7 days after the accident. They told us they were going to do it a day or so after he was admitted. They kept putting it off and it finally dawned on us they weren’t expecting him to make it past the first few days. When they finally set his leg, we rested a little bit easier. Josh was at Baptist for a total of 59 days, for the most part in ICU.
As the days at Baptist started coming to an end, we had to decide what the next step would be in his recovery. At the suggestion of Dr. Chang, we decided to take Josh to the Charlotte Institute of Rehabilitation, part of Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. They had a coma stimulation program and according to what we had read, the sooner they could start working with a patient the better the success rate. Josh had been evaluated and accepted into the program when we heard from our insurance company that they considered coma stimulation experimental and would not pay. The cost for Josh’s stay was estimated to be $30,000.00 – $40,000.00, money we did not have. We were determined Josh was going to have every chance to recover that we could give him even if it meant selling our house and everything we owned. We appealed their decision three times and on the third appeal the Commissioner of Insurance ordered our insurance company to cover Josh’s stay. God is so good. We got a very nice letter from our insurance company thanking us for allowing them to help us when we needed them.
When Josh got to Charlotte, they immediately started dressing him, getting him up, doing therapy and giving him awakening drugs. We learned that he had had a stroke, at some point while he was at Baptist. It was in his charts but we had not been told. Josh had lost a lot of weight but he looked so good dressed in his clothes instead of a hospital gown. They put his Duke hat on him and he started looking like my Josh.
The trip to Charlotte was shaky at first due to Josh getting pneumonia and having to be admitted to the ICU at Carolinas Medical Center. He stayed for four weeks the first time but had to go home because of the pneumonia. After he recuperated, he went back and ultimately it was a success. They were able to get Josh out of the coma. He said his first word since the night of the accident, a tiny word “ok” but we were ecstatic to hear his voice again. It would be a while before he said anything else but we knew he was on his way back to us.
Over the next few months we saw so much progress. The trach was removed while he was in Charlotte, he passed his “swallow” test where it was determined that he could be fed by mouth and the feeding tube was removed. He was fitted for a wheelchair, he starting saying a few more words, started moving his arms, and he started watching TV and changing channels with the remote.
Along with the good there came a few bad things. Josh started having seizures which is a by-product of the head injury. It is something we have had to learn to deal with but we still pray that God will take them away. He also had muscle spasms which have been brought under control by surgically inserting a baclofen pump under the skin to administer the baclofen in measured doses.
Josh’s recovery has been miraculous, especially his speech and memory. We have recently started him on Aricept, which is a drug given to Alzheimer’s patients. After only a few days of being on this drug, he remembered his social security number, 6 years after the accident. His speech and vocabulary continues to improve and his sense of humor is priceless.
He still gets frustrated when we can’t understand what he is trying to say or when he knows what he wants to say but can’t get it out. He is still in a wheelchair but he can move his left leg and toes of his right foot, it just hasn’t developed to the point that he can walk. We believe that one day we will see him walk and maybe even play basketball again. Our God is an awesome God and through Him all things are possible.
Josh is surrounded by family, friends and people who love him dearly. He is such an inspiration to all who know him or meet him. His smile is contagious and God was so good to bless Josh with his old personality, not the anger that is common in head injury patients. He has spent numerous days and weeks in the hospital with various complications but through his strength and God’s will he has conquered every illness.
Since the very hour of the accident prayers have been lifted up in Josh’s name for his recovery. We have always believed in prayer and I firmly believe that the prayers offered up on Josh’s behalf were heard and answered by God.
I have been angry, scared, happy, and sad but through it all I have never been alone. More importantly is the fact that Josh has never been alone; God has always carried Josh in his arms.
A couple of years after the accident, the principal of Patrick County High School called and asked if I could put something together for their anti drug and alcohol week. Lisa and I sat down and came up with “How much does a carton of beer cost”? It tells what a carton of beer has cost Josh and his family.
Nascar driver, Morgan Shepherd, has his own ministry. I gave Morgan a copy of “How much does a carton of beer cost?” and he uses it in his ministry. He has told me of telephone calls and letters that he has received from people who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior because of it. I have given a copy to our sheriff, our Commonwealth Attorney, numerous deputies and state troopers. Wherever the Joyful Noise plays, we close with a recitation of “How much does a carton of beer cost”? It’s hard for me to do and hard for Josh to listen to but he has told me he wants us to do it every time we play. If it will cause one person to turn away from alcohol and turn to the Lord it is well worth it.
Rick and Josh speak at schools, churches and other functions telling Josh’s story. For information scheduling an engagement please contact Rick at rickhill@sitestar.net .

Running With Endurance
–from the messages of Adrian Rogers
BIBLE MEDITATION:
John 12:24 – “Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.”
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
You can tell the size of a Christian by what it takes to stop him. Hebrews 12:1 says we are to “run with patience the race that is set before us.” And this word “patience” is not used in the sense that we use the word. It literally means “endurance.” Everybody knows that a runner is going to win or lose primarily by his endurance. You cannot quit. When it hurts, you cannot quit. When your lungs are on fire, you cannot quit. When your feet feel like lead, you cannot quit. When your sides ache, you cannot quit! You’ll never be a spiritual athlete if you’re a quitter! No pain, no gain.
ACTION POINT:
Thank God for His power that enables you to run the race and gain the victor’s crown!
Mistletoe Half Marathon 2009 Results
26th Annual Mistletoe Half Marathon
Winston-Salem,NC – Saturday, December 05, 2009
For some reason I am not listed in the results. However until the problem is fixed I finished 1hr 50 min and that would have placed me around 250 out of 813 and that pleases me.
Hopefully they will get this fixed.

Update on the Mistletoe Half Marathon
It was a great run. It rained the first 3 miles and after that it completely stopped and really was a great day for a Half Marathon. Not too cold and not hot at all. I am very pleased with my clock time and did really better than I had thought I would.
Here is a breakdown of the miles.
Mile 1 831
Mile 2 810
Mile 3 801
Mile 4 822
Mile 5 857
Mile 6 821
Mile 7 842
Mile 8 826
Mile 9 840
Mile 10 831
Mile 11 819
Mile 12 759
Mile 13 803
Total Time 1 Hour 50 Minutes
Average Mile Pace 822
Total Calories Burned 2096
Again, I am amazed that I did 13.1 miles all under a 9 minute pace. If God allows me to keep at the training I should come back stronger than I was before starting Seminary. Todays time is just 8 minutes slower than my best ever Half Marathon Time and I am 20 pounds heavier than I was then. I am not actually trying to lose weight but will all the training miles I am currently doing the pounds are burning off.

Out of the Box from a teen perspective
The following is a view poing of Out of the Box written by one of the teens who is part of the Ministry downtown Hillsville.
Out of the Box
I’m sure you’ve heard of Out of the Box, a safe, fun place for youth to hang out, but do you know
the full story? It was opened on September 7th, 2008, over a year ago. The ribbon cutting privileges
were given to the Bishop Swanson around noon on that glorious day. Looking past all the fancy
details, what is the true meaning of, and purpose for Out of the Box?
Out of the Box was created for youth. The youth of First United Methodist Church, FUMC,
visited a place called SportsTowne, a church that hosted our youth group as they participated in
missions in Georgia. This wasn’t just any church, though. This church held an indoor football field, a
blow-up obstacle course, and the sanctuary could be transformed into a basketball court in twenty
minutes. You can imagine how much fun our youth had here at this amazing place.
In spite of the secrets and surprises that lay await throughout this magnificent building, the
hearts of our youth were captured by something different, something much more significant. The
hospitality displayed by the hosts was unimaginable. Here were twenty teenagers, loud and wild
teenagers, and yet Beth, the woman in charge, gave them the keys to an amazing $2 million church.
These teens were inspired by the hospitality and grace, and decided they wanted to do the same
thing. And there, in Macon, Georgia, a vision was born. From that vision came Out of the Box, a free,
fun place for youth to come and just hang out without having to worry about being bored or running
into a bad situation.
The Out of the Box we know today has come a long way. It was no small miracle, a lot of work
had to be done. Our youth jumped right in and help bring in couches, piece by piece of the pool table
and fooseball table alike, and countless chairs.
Thanks to the efforts of FUMC youth leaders, Ronnie Collins, Jeff and Terry Scott, Greg and
Lori Huff, and not forgetting our faithful youth, Out of the Box has become a success. Its convenient
location downtown, across from the Hillsville Diner, makes it easy for youth to find. On Wednesday
evenings, youth group is held; it opens at 5 and closes around 9, but Bible study is from 7 to 8 pm.
Everything is completely free, drinks, snacks, even bring a few (appropriate) CDs and you can listen to
them. We have an average attendance of around sixty people, and one week we had almost one
hundred, and we continue to grow in numbers.
Out of the Box has also made the effort to team up with Carroll County Intermediate School to
offer after-school tutoring on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. From 3:30 until 5:00, the students
are focused on academics, but from 5:00 to 6:00, it’s all about the games. Students are invited to play
pool, fooseball, listen to music, watch videos and DVDs, use the computers to their advantage, or just
relax and talk. Drinks and snacks are available free of charge, and in a place like this, it’s hard not to
have fun. The activity bus runs by at 6:00 to pick up the students.
“OOTB is a place where teens can come and not be judged but be accepted for who you are.
Do you have tattoos, piercing, different hairstyles, or dress differently than what someone else may
consider the norm? Or do you look like the majority of society in the way you dress? Are you tall,
skinny, slim, heavy, bald, long hair, skater, nerd? It doesn’t matter at Out Of The Box,” said Ronnie
Collins.

Reason’s people worry
The ignorant worry because they don’t know enough.
The knowledgeable worry because they know too much.
The rich worry because they are afraid of losing what they have.
The poor worry because they don’t have enough.
The old worry because they are facing death.
The young worry because they are facing life.
Come to SNL this week and lets talk about how to never worry again!

SNL This Week – Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Come this Sunday night December 6th, 2009 @ 6:30 and lets worship God together and then we will change the world together.
Ronnie
Matthew 6: 25-34
DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY
In this Holiday Season there is so much worry going on. What gifts do we buy for those we love and what gift do we buy for that one we have to buy for and don’t like, lol.
How much money should we spend on that gift and will they really appreciate it anyway?
How much money should I spend on myself while I am buying all these nice things for everyone else?
Then the biggie – how am I ever going to pay for all of this, the credit cards, the layaway’s, the bills that I have run up tying to please, impress, and satisfy?
The truth is: We have it all wrong
We think to much about how much money to spend for all the wrong reasons. We think too much about how good I look or how fashionable I am . We think too much about buying gifts for everyone that we know. We think too much about how to be a people pleaser.
We have gotten it all wrong!
Come to Sunday Night Live, lets worship the Creator together and I will show you how to live a worry free life!
Ronnie
Matthew 6: 25-34 The Message
25-26“If you decide for God, living a life of God-worship, it follows that you don’t fuss about what’s on the table at mealtimes or whether the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds.
27-29“Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? All this time and money wasted on fashion—do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.
30-33“If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.
34“Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.
Marathon Memories – Virginia Creeper Trail March 30th, 2003
This is the 2nd Marathon I had ever done. I woke up that morning and it was snowing.
We called the race headquarters and asked if the Marathon would be canceled and they replied “Why”?
So we ran! It was fun for the 1st 13.1 miles and pretty miserable the 2nd half, wet and soggy.
My 2nd Marathon was a memorable one. “A Freakish Snow”
I finished #30 out of 78 and ran with my good friends Tim Lewis and Rick Karampatsos.

Myrtle Beach Marathon is 70 DAYS | 23 HRS | 13 MINS | 37 SECONDS I am again raising moeny to support the Children of Sudan
Lets Change the World Together – Running for Sudan
After reading an inspiring book “Take Your Best Shot” and coupling that with the Biblical mandate to help those who are in need. I decided to run the Atlanta Thanksgiving Day Marathon to raise support for the children of Sudan. That run is complete but the donations for the children are still coming in. The last count is around $1700.00 that has been given.
Thank you to all who have supported and I pray that you consider giving again and also telling your friends what I am doing. I am excited about the fact that Holston Conference wants to build a home for homeless children in Southern Sudan Africa and I just believe that God can build it through those who run and those who give. Lets be the miracle these children need.
With the Atlanta Marathon now being history, I am now signed up for the Myrtle Beach Marathon February 13th, 2009.
26 people (youth groups, UMW, UMM, any group)could donate $100

Here is a message from our Holston Conference UMC Bishop, James Swanson
